Chlorides
Chlorides – bad taste & odor – generally combines with calcium, magnesium, or sodium to form various salts. For ex: sodium chloride (NaCl) – most common anions found in tap water – occurs naturally in groundwater – found in greater concentrations where seawater & run-off from road salts (salts used to de-ice icy roads) can make their way into water sources
Harmful Effects
- Damage plants if used for gardening or irrigation
- Gives drinking water an unpleasant taste
- High corrosivity overtime will damage plumbing, appliances, & water heaters
- Leaching toxic metals
- Complicate existing heart problems
- Contribute to high blood pressure when ingested in excess
